Sue Yencha's 5th grade class at North Chatham School in Chapel Hill
created an extremely successful service learning project that yielded
nearly 600 pounds of food for cats and dogs of Chatham Animal Rescue and
Education (CARE) awaiting their forever homes. The students were eager
to collect supplies for animals waiting to be adopted and wanted to
learn more about how CARE volunteers further their mission in the
community as well as what supplies CARE's dogs and cats needed.
Friday, December 11th, Frances Haman, a long time volunteer CARE foster
caregiver, and her adopted CARE dog, Rastus, met the enthusiastic
students in Ms. Yencha's 5th grade. The students were enthralled with
the educational information Frances provided and loved the fact she
brought her well mannered dog with her. The eager learners prepared
questions in advance covering the spectrum from rescue work; to animal
care and preventing overpopulation which Frances answered drawing on her
years of experience saving the lives of numerous animals in Chatham
County.
The 5th graders wanted to make a significant impact with their 5th grade
project. They developed creative techniques to let everyone at North
Chatham school know about their exciting project and the meaningful work
CARE does in the community. The class made large posters which they
carried outside daily and displayed where car-riders meet their
transportation home. Each afternoon, they stood along the car-riders
after school to advertise and collect donations. They went even further
by dressing up in a Scooby-Doo costume in an effort to draw extra
attention (and extra donations) to the needy animals of CARE.
Ms. Yencha proudly commented, "I am amazed at how much the families of
North Chatham have donated. My students have been graphing how many
pounds we have collected and they tell me that we are near 600 pounds.
The kids have really enjoyed this service learning project."
CARE was thrilled to participate and deliver an educational outreach
message to the younger members of the community. The selfless act of
Ms. Yencha's 5th grade class has uplifted the volunteers of CARE.
Ms. Yencha is delivered the donations to CARE volunteer foster
caregiver, Laura Miller, on Friday, December18th at 4:30 PM at Central
Carolina Community College in Pittsboro. The cats and dogs of CARE are
purring and wagging their tails with excitement!
Chatham Animal Rescue and Education, Inc. is a not-for-profit animal
rescue that has been saving the lives of Chatham County cats and dogs
for over 30 years. All CARE animals are fostered in volunteer foster
homes. CARE pays for food and routine medical expenses such as spay or
neuter, rabies vaccinations, deworming and vaccinations. Adoption fees
cover the very basic medical expenses of animals, but they do not cover
additional treatments that some animals require. Donations can be
mailed to CARE, PO Box 610, Pittsboro, NC 27312.
