Remembering Dex

Dex was the best friend and big brother that I could have ever hoped for when I first met him at a CARE adoption event in 2014. Dex was a sensitive soul whose unique qualities and personality made him truly special.

During our early years together, we spent countless hours on walks in the woods around Carrboro and Dex spent many a night chasing rabbits (both live on our walks and in his dreams). He loved going to the dog park and enjoyed trying to get the bigger dogs to chase him. (I can still see him down low on his front paws, butt in the air, tail wagging as he barked at them.)

After my wife and I moved to Atlanta, Dex became a big brother for the first time with the birth of our daughter. As he aged, Dex may have lost a step to the bunnies, favoring instead to roll around in the grass of our back yard and sit on the deck sunbathing. His patience as he grew to tolerate the small humans that entered his life (and his personal space) was special to us. After our second daughter was born, we moved to the Boston area. Again, Dex adapted to a new home and new surroundings, often opting to retreat to his favorite quiet spots away from the craziness of a home with two young ladies who both adored their “big brother Dexy.”

While the past several months has been challenging, Dex was always good for a cuddle and enjoyed our evening walks. He remained a gentle, loving presence in our home right up until the end. While we are heartbroken with the reality that his physical absence in our lives leaves an irreplaceable emptiness, our memories of him have helped during the initial grief of his passing.
