Foster an Animal

Chatham Animal Rescue & Education, Inc. (CARE) depends on a unique and dedicated group of foster volunteers to help us save more lives! CARE does not have a shelter, therefore we can only rescue as many cats and dogs as we have space for in our volunteer foster caregiver network. Longer-term foster caregivers are needed and we ask for at least a one-year commitment. Fostering is not necessarily easy – it takes a great deal of time and energy – both emotional and physical. But, by fostering a homeless animal, you can experience the joys of helping an animal in need.

While in your custody, we ask you provide your foster cat or dog affection, food, shelter and socialization to be successfully adopted.

What’s it like to foster for CARE?

Hear first-hand experiences from our dog foster caregivers and our cat foster caregivers!

CARE provides our foster caregivers:

  • All necessary medication and medical care for foster animals
  • Quality food and pet supplies, including beds, toys, crates, harnesses and leashes, litter
  • Education on how to care for your foster animal
  • An experienced foster mentor who will help you with all stages of the fostering and adopting process

Requirements:

  • Your current pets must be up to date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered.
  • Foster caregivers must be able to provide a safe and caring home environment and must have time to provide socializing experiences for their foster animal.
  • Foster caregivers showcase their animals at CARE sponsored adoption events and, together with their mentors, show foster animals to potential adopters.
  • Be prepared to let go. It can be very difficult to let go once you have become emotionally attached to your foster animal. Know that the love and socialization you give means he/she is more likely to find a forever home! And this opens up room to save the life of another animal in need.
