Fostering for CARE – Leslie’s Experience

Leslie started her foster caregiver journey in 2020. She fosters dogs and also has dogs of her own. Leslie has had a lifelong interest in finding homes for dogs in need and that’s what brought her to CARE.

Did you have any concerns or hesitation before you began fostering?

Integration with my pet, do I know what I am doing, what impact will it have on my family?

What kind of support do you receive from CARE?

Lots of support, especially for the first experience. Training and vet services were key.

What’s your favorite aspect about fostering? Why do you do it?

My first foster family still gives me updates on how happy Ross is in his forever home.

What advice would you give to someone considering foster caregiving?

I don’t think I fully grasped that I would be 100% responsible for placing the dog.

What’s your favorite story about one of your foster animals?

You often hear about foster fails. My mother-in-law adopted my foster dog Harvey the chihuahua. He is now part of my extended family. He’s a real character and brings her so much joy, since it has been a few years since her husband and her dog passed. She helped him lose weight and now he is no longer bothered by a knee issue that he came to me with.
